This movie takes place in the 1940's when Andy Defresne was accused of murdering his wife. He was then proved guilty for the murder of his wife and her lover and was sent to Shawshank prison in Maine. The prison itself was very bland. Mostly concrete and brick walls and concrete floor with minimal windows. In this scene particularly the prisoners were on the roof of the prison tarring it with the prison guards watching over them. Obviously there are two main groups at first identified, the prisoner and the guards, the guards having full control over the prisoners. This means that the prisoners have very strict codes of behavior and step out of line or else they will be punished. Andy Defrense disobeyed this and he decided to step out of line to talk to one of the guards about his problem and when the guard got angry he was about to throw Andy off the roof bringing the setting back into play. At the end Andy and his "co-workers" were having a drink of beer on the roof, except Andy was the only one not actually drinking.

The three visual design elements the I noticed the most was the color palette, the film stock, and the lighting. At first glance I did not realize anything special with the color palette but as I looked closer I saw that when Andy was being held by the guard on the edge of the roof and they both started talking, every time the camera showed Andy talking it showed the view of green grass and trees in the background while the background of the guard was a bland grey and black. The film stock throughout this entire movie was more on the rough side since it takes place in a more depressing and corrupt place. The only time where there could be a minor change in film stock is the last scene of the movie where Andy and Red met on the beach, but I do not think the director would use a different film stock for just one scene. Lastly, the lighting was made to be quite obvious in this scene. Overall it was more of a medium key lighting but at the end Andy was the only one out of the prisoners that was sitting in the shade. This separated Andy into a group by himself creating three groups free men (guards), men who feel free (prisoners), and man soon to be free (Andy).
